Forensic Fire
Investigation
Scientific determination of fire origin, cause and responsibility — producing court-admissible expert reports for insurance claims, criminal proceedings and civil litigation across Kenya.
The Science Behind Every Fire Scene
Forensic fire investigation is the systematic, scientific examination of a fire scene to determine precisely where a fire started (origin) and what caused it (cause). It applies fire science, chemistry, physics, and investigative methodology to reconstruct how a fire developed — and whether it was accidental, natural, or deliberately set.
Every fire encodes its story in burn patterns, char depth, smoke deposits, heat vectors, and chemical residues. A qualified forensic fire investigator reads that evidence with the same rigour applied to any other forensic discipline — forming and testing hypotheses against the physical record until a scientifically defensible conclusion is reached.
At Ultimate Forensic Consultants Ltd, every fire investigation is conducted with a single non-negotiable outcome: a report that holds up under cross-examination in the Kenyan High Court. Our methodology is aligned with NFPA 921 — the internationally recognised standard for fire and explosion investigation.
“A thorough forensic fire investigation doesn’t just determine cause — it protects the innocent, identifies the truly responsible, and produces evidence that decides the outcome of insurance claims and criminal proceedings.”
Scene Preservation & Documentation
Before any debris is disturbed, the scene is photographically and schematically documented in full — establishing the as-found condition as evidence.
Origin Determination
Using burn pattern analysis and fire dynamics, investigators identify the precise area of origin — the point where the fire began.
Cause Classification
Fire cause is classified as accidental, natural, incendiary (arson), or undetermined — each carrying distinct legal and insurance consequences.
Accelerant & Laboratory Analysis
Debris samples are tested by accredited laboratories using GC-MS analysis to detect ignitable liquid residues and accelerant patterns.
Court-Ready Expert Report
All findings are compiled into a comprehensive expert report structured for use in insurance claims, civil litigation, or criminal prosecution.
A Rigorous Six-Phase Process
Every fire investigation we conduct follows a structured, reproducible scientific methodology — from first response to final report. No shortcuts. No assumptions. Evidence drives every conclusion.
Preservation & Safety Assessment
We coordinate with fire services and law enforcement to secure the scene. A full hazard assessment precedes entry. Conditions are documented as-found before any disturbance — establishing the evidentiary baseline.
Systematic Scene Examination
Working from least-damaged areas inward, investigators map burn patterns, smoke deposits, char depth, glass fracture patterns and heat vectors to reconstruct fire travel and identify the area of origin.
Evidence Recovery & Chain of Custody
Physical evidence — debris samples, electrical components, ignition devices — is recovered under strict chain-of-custody protocols and packaged for laboratory submission. Custody is documented at every transfer.
Accelerant Detection & Analysis
Debris samples are submitted to accredited forensic laboratories for GC-MS accelerant analysis. Results are interpreted in the context of scene findings to identify or exclude ignitable liquid involvement.
Witness Interviews & Digital Data Integration
Structured interviews with witnesses, first responders and occupants are conducted. CCTV footage, alarm logs, utility records and financial data are reviewed and integrated with physical findings.
Origin, Cause Determination & Expert Report
Applying the scientific method, we form and test hypotheses until the most defensible conclusion is reached. A detailed expert report is delivered, with investigators available for court testimony where required.

Instruct UsCommon Fire Causes — What We Investigate
Our investigators are trained to recognise, distinguish and scientifically document the full range of accidental and incendiary fire causes. Understanding causation is the foundation of every investigation.
Accidental Fire Causes
Electrical Faults
Arc faults, short circuits, overloaded circuits, faulty wiring, and defective appliances — among the most frequent causes of structural fires in Kenya.
Cooking Incidents
Unattended cooking, grease fires and ignition of adjacent combustibles remain a leading cause of residential fires in both urban and rural properties.
Heating Equipment
Improper use or maintenance of heating appliances, generators and open-flame heating devices — particularly in inadequately ventilated spaces.
Flammable Liquid Misuse
Accidental ignition of petrol, kerosene, solvents and other flammable liquids during storage or application — a significant risk in Kenyan commercial premises.
Smoking Materials
Carelessly discarded cigarettes or burning materials igniting upholstered furniture, bedding, or stored materials.
Children & Open Flame
Fires caused by unsupervised children accessing matches, lighters or open flames — requiring sensitive yet scientifically rigorous investigation.
Incendiary (Arson) Indicators
Multiple Points of Origin
Discovery of two or more geographically separate, unconnected areas of origin — the primary physical indicator of deliberate fire-setting.
Accelerant Residues
Laboratory detection of petrol, kerosene or other ignitable liquid residues in locations inconsistent with their legitimate storage or use.
Unusual Burn Patterns
Irregular low-burn patterns, “pour patterns,” burn trails or heat damage inconsistent with normal fire development from a single accidental ignition.
Disabled Suppression Systems
Removed detector batteries, disabled sprinklers, or obstructed exits — evidence of premeditated planning before fire-setting.
Missing Valuables & Documents
Evidence that personal property, financial records or stock was removed before the fire — a key indicator in suspected insurance fraud investigations.
Contextual Motive Indicators
Financial distress, recent disputes, insurance policy increases, prior threats or prior fire incidents — contextual factors integrated with physical forensic findings.
The Evidence We Collect and Analyse
Forensic fire investigation is evidence-driven. Our investigators identify, preserve and document a wide range of physical, chemical and digital evidence — all collected under chain-of-custody protocols that ensure legal admissibility.
No assumption is made without physical evidence to support it. Every conclusion is tested against alternative hypotheses before it is committed to a court report.

Your Questions Answered
The questions we most frequently receive from advocates, insurers and clients considering forensic fire investigation.
How soon after a fire should I commission a forensic investigation?
As soon as possible. Fire scenes deteriorate rapidly through weathering, salvage operations, demolition and contamination. Critical evidence that exists immediately after a fire may be permanently lost within days. We recommend contacting us as soon as the scene is released by the fire service or police — even before your insurer’s assessor visits. Early engagement gives our investigators the best opportunity to document and recover the evidence that determines the outcome of your claim or proceedings.
Can I commission an independent investigation after my insurer’s investigator has attended?
Yes. You have the right to commission an independent forensic investigation at any stage — including after your insurer’s investigator has already attended. An independent investigation by Ultimate Forensic Consultants can identify methodological deficiencies in the original investigation, provide an alternative expert opinion, and produce an independent report for use in a dispute with your insurer or in legal proceedings. We regularly act as second-opinion experts in contested fire claims.
How long does a forensic fire investigation take?
The timeline depends on the complexity and scale of the incident. A straightforward residential fire can typically be investigated and reported within two to four weeks. A complex commercial or industrial matter involving laboratory analysis, multiple witness interviews, and extensive documentation may take six to ten weeks or longer. We provide every client with a realistic timeline at the outset and maintain regular communication throughout. Our 4-hour response guarantee ensures your matter is assessed promptly from day one.
What is the difference between accidental and incendiary (arson) fire causes?
An accidental fire occurs without intent — caused by equipment failure, human error, or natural ignition. An incendiary fire is one that has been deliberately and intentionally set. Forensic investigation determines which classification is scientifically appropriate through physical evidence analysis at the scene. A fire may also be classified as “undetermined” where the evidence is insufficient to support either conclusion — this is an equally valid and scientifically defensible finding, and one that protects policyholders from wrongful arson allegations.
Are your fire investigation reports admissible in the Kenyan High Court?
Yes. Our investigators are qualified forensic expert witnesses with a 99% court acceptance rate across 57+ High Court matters. Our reports are structured to meet Kenyan High Court evidentiary requirements — with fully documented methodology, referenced standards, and conclusions that withstand cross-examination. Our team is available to attend court, arbitration hearings, or insurance panels to provide sworn expert testimony. We are PSRA Licensed and ODPC Registered, ensuring all investigation activities comply with Kenyan law.
I have been falsely accused of arson. Can you help?
Yes — this is one of our most important roles. We regularly act for individuals wrongly accused of arson by insurers or in criminal proceedings. An independent forensic investigation can establish whether the evidence cited against you is scientifically sound, whether alternative accidental causes were adequately considered, and whether the investigation methodology meets recognised standards. Our objective, evidence-based findings have provided decisive exculpatory evidence in numerous matters. Contact us immediately — early instruction gives us the best opportunity to recover and preserve the evidence that protects you.
Do you provide fire investigation services outside Nairobi?
Yes. Ultimate Forensic Consultants maintains operational offices in Nairobi, Mombasa and Kisumu, and provides forensic fire investigation services across all 47 counties of Kenya. We also assist with cases in other East African jurisdictions where required. Travel logistics and any associated costs are discussed and agreed with clients at the outset of each engagement.
